The Southern Maine Workers’ Center (SMWC) joined the statewide Maine Health Care is a Human Right Campaign in 2013, and committed to building the collective power of working-class and low-income people to demand and win a universal, publicly funded health care system in Maine. The campaign strategy is to start with a focus on base-building by collecting people’s health care stories through surveys, establishing organizing committees across the state, and holding town hall style speak-outs to build grassroots power and change what’s politically possible.
